What is music and imagery?

How music can stimulate images in your mind
Music and imagery

Music therapy is an evidence-based allied health profession. Music therapists have completed extensive university based training alongside their skills as trained musicians. Our dual role as a therapist and musician gives us a unique ability to understand how to best utilise our music therapy methods and resources.

One technique often used in music therapy is music and imagery. Music and imagery involves using music to create a mental image or scene in the mind of the listener. The image can be related to a specific emotion, memory, or experience, and can be used to help the listener explore and process their feelings in a safe and supportive environment. This form of psychotherapy is adapted from Guided Imagery and Music which is a longer and more intense method. Music and imagery is a great method for those who are looking for a shorter experience as the technique can be offered within one session.

During a music and imagery therapy session, the music therapist will typically guide the client through a relaxation exercise to help the client achieve a state of calm and relaxation. Once the client is relaxed, the music therapist will then play a piece of music and ask the client to begin to visualise the chosen scene or image while listening to the music. The music therapist will then guide the client through a discussion of the image and its meaning, helping the client to process any emotions or experiences that may have been triggered by the music and imagery experience.

Music and imagery can be particularly effective for individuals who have difficulty expressing their emotions through words or need more support processing a lived experience. It can also be helpful for individuals dealing with depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, as it provides a safe and non-threatening way to explore and process feelings and experiences.

In addition to music and imagery being used in therapy sessions, it can also be used as a self-care technique. Individuals can use music and imagery on their own to help manage stress, anxiety, and other emotional challenges. By listening to music and visualising calming or positive images, you can reduce your levels of stress and promote relaxation.

Overall, music and imagery is a powerful tool in music therapy that can help individuals explore and process their emotions in a safe and supportive environment. It can also be used as a self-care technique to promote relaxation and reduce stress.
